Transfer files form Old to New Computer

Richard

In using Windows XP tranfer files from old (window 2000
computer) to new Computer the connection never connects.
I have followed the Wizard in making the disc and then
running it on the old computer. I am using the serial
port to port cable to transfwer the files. Port 1 on
both computers. It contiues to try to make connection.
I have waited for at least an hour with no sucess. I
have tried the routine three times with no sucess. What
can I do to make it work?

Are you sure you're using the correct kind of cable? Frankly, lots of
people have reported difficulties using the transfer wizard. The
easiest thing to do really is to simply take the old hard drive, put it
in the new computer as a slave drive - temporarily or permanently,
whichever you wish - and copy the files that way. If this is something
you're uneasy about doing, take the machine to a good local computer
repair shop (not a CompUSA or BestBuy type) and have them do it. It
won't cost much and you won't have to spend any more time on this.

Cheers,

The easiest way to resolve your problem is to run the Files and
Settings Transfer Wizard on the Windows 2000 machine and save the file
it creates into a new folder named \Transfer on that machine's hard
drive.

Then remove the hard drive from the machine, install the hard drive
temporarily as a second hard drive in the Windows XP Machine, and run
the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to import the files.

Forget about using a serial cable to transfer the data, unless all you
have got is a few emails. A very fast and efficient serial cable
connection might transfer about 20 mb per hour.

Good luck
