Tracking changes in a .dot file

Using Word 2003 on Windows XP.
It seems as though Track Changes screws up when I try to compare two issues
of a document template (i.e. they are both .dot files). Things work OK if
one or both of the files is a .doc file. Is this a known "feature", or is it
possible that I've missed something obvious?

I'm not sure why you are trying to compare *.dot files? Usually, template
files should not ned that much editing.
