Tracker is a high-quality program. Yet, it is lacking one thing that I
find essential.

In drive/file navigation, I have constant use for the address bar, where
I paste paths from clipboard. Tracker is evidently lacking an address bar.
And I see no way to quickly get to directories when I need to, when I know
already their paths. (Btw, not talking about favorites or whatever). I even
tried on a workaround, use of the Find panel. However that only provided
a files list, and did not change the tree view. Perhaps I am somehow being
blind, and overlooked some possible setting. If not, then I'd like to submit
to the author a feature request, for an address bar....

Ah, so I was being blind. It's even there right there off the main menu
commands. I should have thought of it, as it's the same situation with the
registry editor I use, Regmagik. It too lacks an address bar and has the
GoTo dialog launched by icon / menu / CTRL-G.

That does the trick, thank you.

However. ;) I'd like to -still- request if you'd log down 1 vote in favor
of an optional address bar display for the main interface. While can adapt
to CTRL-G, as with Regmagik, would be happiest to see an address bar.

Unless I missed something the item missing in Tracker that I wanted
is a quick/easy way to exclude files with certain extensions from
searches. Without having to put those extensions in the search
criteria each time. Like exclude folders but of file extensions.

Karen, you probably noticed om the RegMagik website:
"Latest version 4.0 was released in October 2004. Main new feature is
the address bar - based on feedback from newsgroups. Also setup is
replaced with no install file since many users wanted no-install
distribution."

I did a Google groups search for Regmagik and "address bar" and found
only your posts as result.
And you also have strongly advocated no install distribution, even
helped others with that.
So, I guess this new (shareware) version ows much to your usenet posts.
But I wonder, did you also ever email the author?

My point is: a few days ago, out of the blue, I got an email from the
author.
"If you e-mail me your serial number (displayed in the About
Regmagik dialog) I'll send you free activation code, because you are one
of the first users and I value your support."
(This because I once informed him that I could not install a new
version, because of missing dll's. They had higher version numbers than
I have, something he had overseen when testing.)

Now, I don't mind the address bar thing much at all and frankly I find
you the only one worthy of getting the free activation code.
So how about this: you install version 4.0 and email me the serial
number that you see in the about box (hardware dependent) and I email
the author your serial number.

I hadn't visited the website in a while, so didn't know about this until
you pointed it out. Thanks for the interesting bit. Not sure how to feel
about it, since now Regmagik has moved to ... the other side. I try to
not get seduced by sweet-talking shareware. Nice cologne, and looking good
in those tight jeans, but ...

Sending him a mail had been in the back recesses of my todo forever - but
I never got to it.

This is very generous of you Sietse, to offer me that gift. Thank you.
I'm touched. =)

I am going to decline, though. I'm thinking now that I ought consider
sending the author $15. I could always call it a donation for my major
use of the freeware product over the past couple of years. And could also,
if switch to the new one, feel all right to then list for him a few other
changes I'd be interested in.

Btw, saw another interesting bit on his website.

"1 (yes, one!) user has actually paid so far."

Not surprising. He never really tried getting word out, during all the
time he had the freeware available. And that task is way smaller than
the significant amount of time and money that shareware authors have to
devote, in pursuit of gaining a few sales.

Well, maybe for Xmas ;)...

Here's something nice for the meantime. Yesterday I added this little thing
to the Ctrl+G functionality:

+ Menu Go/Go to...: now you can also paste a path/file name and jump
directly to a specific file in that path.

You can download v3.60.0067 from the user forum.

Bugger, are you a tough one.
Tried eau de cologne and looking smart in my jeans and this gift and...
I'm giving up. Can't win them all, I guess.
Heh heh.

Karen,

press Ctrl+G (for "Go") and paste/type your destination path.

regarding the "go" list---the only thing I wish about the entire
program is to be able to control (limit or optionally turn off) the
history. I have some hidden files which I'd like exclude from that
list, but see no way to do so. A 'toggle' to turn on the history for
the current session would be very handy.

possible in the future?

even in the present:

v3.60.0060 - 11.10.04 11:20
+ Added advanced option to forget the history (Go menu) between
sessions. Allows you to hide your tracks. This is the INI key to
edit:

ForgetHistory=1

Just curious: what kind of files you want to exclude?

I have a huge number of .exe and .zip files on my system. When
searching for files I don't want to waste time looking through those
filetypes. At other times I might want to exclude .htm files from a
search, or .tmp files, or .bak files or....

Well, now I'll hope that you don't use Santa Claus' rules, about have to be
good boys & girls, else get only coal in the stocking.

I can see already how that can serve to come in quite handy. During the
recurrent need of seeking context of a known target from a busy directory.
In that circumstance, my general habit has been a hassled sequence of steps
(non-Tracker): a FND dialog, then an open containing folder, then a manual
hunt for the file in its folder.

Thanks for building a direct road! With too destination featuring the
renowned Tracker Inne (clam chowder, please, and a pint of house porter).

The handsome suitor so quickly turned foot? Leaving Rapunzel abandoned
in her fortress, crying her maiden tears...

I see. Please put your wish to the TV3 user forum; it's always proved useful
to throw a couple of brains at a potential feature before going to work.

have v3.60.0068 ...ini file does not have this key.... is it as
simple as adding it? I would assume that I need to edit a key value
that YOU put there.

The key ForgetHistory is surely there, somewhere in the [Settings] section!
Look again and set it to 1. If you don't find it, which is nearly impossible
but anyway: simply add it to the [Settings] section:
ForgetHistory=1
