Tough time rebooting.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 running Win XP Media Center. In the past couple
of days, my computer has begun to lock up when in AOL, and I have to turn off
and reboot. It will freeze again during the boot up cycle at different
points. How do I find out what is causing this so it can be fixed?

Boot to the Recovery Console, and run the command:
CHKDSK /R

If I do that, do I run the risk of losing any of my applications? My computer
has software on it that is not easily replaced. I have a seperate hard drive,
and can backup my data, but am not confident in my skills to replace the
information correctly. I have a Maxtor OneTouch4 external hard drive, but am
confused to as how to exactly replace my OS for my work.

chkdsk will repair the drive entries, if anything can. No damage to the
system should result, beyond what might already be gone.
