touchpad & Vista?

Is it possible to turn off the touchpad on an Acer Aspire 2920z running
Vista Home Premium? My wife uses this system as a 'desktop' and finds
the touchpad a nuisance as she keeps brushing it while she is typing!
I've tried all the Control Panel options. I remember doing it in XP.

Suggest checking your laptop's manual (may be one available online as a PDF
document if you don't have one); perhaps look for an icon in the System Tray
related to the touchpad, right-click it and investigate options; look for
Services applet within Control Panel. Can't give more directions than that
regarding Control Panel because I can't remember precisely where it is in
Vista - it might be different from XP and this is an XP group, after all...

I had already checked the manual, it just said I could turn off vertical
scrolling on the touchpad, not the pad itself! No icon in Systray,
couldn't find anything in Services related to touch pad, and I'm waiting
for a mail back from Acer!.
Yes, of course, this is an XP group, my apologies, and thanks.

Ask in a Vista newsgroup.

That laptops that I've used have a pushbutton next to the touchpad to
physically disable it. I then use a USB-connected mouse instead of the
touchpad.

I haven't tried this, because I don't want to cripple my laptop.

My Operating System is Win XP, so the following advice might not
apply to Vista.

In Win XP, the following steps would disable the touchpad. I am
not familiar with Vista. However, you would probably need to
make any configuration changes as System Administrator.

In any case, don't try this until you have plugged in a USB or
PS/2 mouse. Otherwise, you won't have any pointing device.

Open Control Panel.
Click on System and select the Hardware tab
Click on Device Manager
Scroll down to "Mice and Other Pointing Devices"
Expand this category and right click on Synaptics PS/2 Port
TouchPad
Click on Disable

You might need to save your changes

yeah, you can
disable the touchpad.

check your computer
manual or the faq's
at acer.

what helps me with
the itty bitti laptop
is to simply connect
and use a usb kb and
a usb mouse.

if and when the usb kb
gives out, it is cheaper
to replace it with another
7 dollar kb instead of

sending in the laptop for
repair when its kb gives
out - that is if its used on
a regular basis.

I've tried all the Control Panel options. I remember doing it in XP.

The control is supplied by the hardware manufacturer. On my Thinkpad,
there's a utility that lets you configure various aspects of the hardware,
including turning off the touchpad. On your system, you may find that this
control is in the BIOS.

In any case, it's not a native OS function, and if there is an applet in
Control Panel, the hardware manufacturer put it there.

If all else fails, you could try locating the touchpad in Device Manager and
disabling it.

OK, thanks everyone, I've got it now!

Fn+F7 toggles touchpad on/off.
