Sure could use some advice.
I'm running 2000 professional on a dell inspiron 4000
(laptop). Over the past week my touchpad has been
gradually failing. Today the "tap" function and touchpad
buttons ceased to work at all.
I uninstalled the synaptics software that controls the pad
and downloaded and installed it again - no improvement.
I booted from the dell diagnostic disk and ran the input
device tests - the "tap" test and button test - passed
both with flying colors.
After discussing the problem with Dell tech support they
said that it had to be an OS problem and that I should
reinstall Windows 2000.
By the way, I connected an external mouse and it works
perfectly.
I really don't want to reinstall my operating system and
then have to reload all the software that I have on this
machine just to get the touchpad to work. If anyone has
any ideas or recommendations on a fix (other than to "not
buy a Dell!") please let me know.
Thanks much
