Touching USB causes PC reset??

Hey guys,

Here is an odd one. I have a PC that is acting very weird. When you
attempt to plug in the USB cable from an iPod, even just TOUCHING the
usb plug to the recepticle... it causes the PC to reset entirely.

Any ideas?

thanks.

There have been posts in other groups in the past where the chipset
actually burned because of a problem with the USB ports on the
motherboard. Plugging in a device into one of the ports either killed
just the USB ports or the motherboard. The only solution was to use an
add-on USB card. The problem seemed to be that there wasn't enough
isolation between the ports and the motherboard causing the problems.

Static + probably a grounding problem.

A more likely cause is a front panel USB that has been mis-connected
to the motherboard. This is usually because the USB's internal leads
are "loose", not formed into a plug as such, so it's really easy to
plug them in incorrectly. Here's how they usually should go...

a b c d e
f g h i j .

.. = no pin (to inticate orientation)
a = Red
b = White
c = Green
d = Black

e = sheild (usually not connected)

f =Ref
g = White
h = Green
i = Black

Just remember the Italian flag colors Red, White and Green for the
first three (a, b, c) and then Black for the last (d). Pins f, g, h
and i are the same as a, b, c and d but for the other socket (don'tmix
the two sockets' leads up!)

Thanks guys....

Does everyone agree that it is definately a hardware problem?
Sometimes told me maybe a virus, but that doesn't make any sense to me.

So, what do you think is a viable solution.... an ISA USB card perhaps?

A PCI USB card will work, or you can try to trace down the short/ground
fault.

If it's a misconnect you could plug them in right.

Otherwise, a PCI USB card. ISA is dead!

I've seen this when using a cheap USB cable and plugging into USB ports
on the front of a computer. Plugging a good grounded and shielded cable
on the front is ok and so is plugging that same cheap cable into a port
on the back of the computer. It's a static issue I think.

Try another cable. Try your present cable in another computer.
