Tools menu in WORD gone

J

janet-m

Hi
I use the menu "Tools" often. But what happen now I never thought possible.

I clicked on Tools to open it but instead a tiny box, the size of the word
Tools appeared under my mouse and when I clicked it, instead of opening the
tools menu,
the entire thing with the menu Tools word is gone. I can't find it.

I right clicked the menu bar and got the "Customize" window where it tells
me to highlight and drag the word menu to the bar but it will not do it.

Does anyone know where to find the menu "Tools" and how to restore it?

Many thanks
Janet

The option you seek is under Tools / customise

You need to select the area/tab that allows you to see all the menu items
and not just last used items on the menu.

I have Word 2007 so I can't tell you exactly where this is or what it's
called

It sounds like you were trying to drag and drop from the left-hand part of
the dialog box, headed "Categories" (containing File, Edit, View, Insert
etc); you can only drag from the right-hand part, "Commands" (New..., New,
New |>, New Web Page, etc).

If you haven't customised your menu bar, the quickest thing might be to
reset it (resetting will lose your customisations). To do that, do the
right-click > Customize bit you've described but then choose the leftmost
tab along the top, "Toolbars". Click once on "Menu Bar" to select it (it
highlights - don't worry about the ticks, they're just for what displays in
Word) then click on the "Reset..." button on the right. I think it prompts
you to confirm that you do indeed want to do this (not 100% sure as I'm not
going to try it myself!). Say yes, OK/Close your way out. This should set it
back to how you want.

If you're experiencing what I think TaurArian is describing (and I'm not
sure it is), and want "to see all the menu items and not just last used
items on the menu", then when you click on the word "Tools" you should see
a double-ended downward-pointing arrow at the bottom of the list of items
that does appear. Hovering your mouse over this will expand the list to show
all items. To fix this, do the right-click > Customize but choose the
rightmost tab, "Options", select "Always show full menus", and OK your way
back out.

It might be worth noting that if you have Word open but no *document* open,
many items in the lists under Menu items are greyed out anyway, including
"Options" under "Tools".

For future reference, this group is for problems with Windows XP itself, and
Word isn't part of the XP operating system (although often bundled with new
PCs). If you have any more issues with Word, you would be better off posting
in one of the dedicated Word groups such as microsoft.public.word.newusers.
(That said, feel free to reply to this post if you have further questions on
this particular issue - I'll reply if I can!)

Hope this all helps.

Hello
I was not trying to drag and drop. I never need nor do such courageous
things...:)
I was only trying to open the TOOLS menu, something I do many times. But I
may have inadvertently done it with the right instead of the left click.
The result was that the word TOOLS became a tiny removable box, it got stuck
to the mouse arrow, and when I tried to click it, it was gone.
I did all I know to find it, include all your instructions here, but all
instructions start with going into the TOOL menu, and I have no TOOL menu so
I can proceed in any direction.

I want to do something completely different this time, RE-INSTALL Office
2003 from my original disc which is now 5 years old and never been used
after original installation. Questions:
1) Do I have first to remove the existing Office 2003 or I can install it
on top of it?
2) And if I must delete first the old Office in order to install it ANEW,
A) then how to do that,
B) and what are the side effects of such a deep surgery?

Many thanks for a reply

You need to be asking your questions in an Office or Word newsgroup where
the experts hang out.

You said, "I right clicked the menu bar and got the "Customize" window where
it tells me to highlight and drag the word menu to the bar but it will not
do it" which tells me that you at least tried to! (As an aside,
drag-and-drop is a fundamental and useful feature of the Windows interface
and you would do well to overcome your fear of it!)

I did all I know to find it, include all your instructions here, but

No, they don't - read them again. My main suggestion of resetting the menu
bar said to start with the right-click > Customize steps which you have
already said you CAN do. Turning on the display of all menu items didn't
start with clicking on Tool(s) either.

I want to do something completely different this time, RE-INSTALL
Office 2003 from my original disc

Again, please read what I wrote. This separate request is still unrelated to
Windows XP; you should repost your new questions to a more appropriate
group.

Dear Olorin
I got to the place where It says "Reset" all, and clicked it. It should have
asked my permission but it never did because it doesn't act at all.
This thing died and it is all because of an inadvertent left or right click
on a menu.
Right click on the icon bar gives me a long list of different bars I can use
or switch off but I only use the two upper ones, "Standard" and
"Formatting"
I tried the HELP menu by MS but all their recommendations start by going to
the TOOLS menu and that's precisely what I don't have.
Thanks for any one who can help

Where does it say ""reset" all"? Please describe exactly what steps you took
to get there. I don't think anything I've described will get you anywhere
that says that - not "all".

If you highlight (click once on) the "Menu bar" item in the Toolbars tab of
the Customize dialog box and click the "Reset" button, it will ask for
confirmation, and you can OK or Cancel. It sounds like you're somewhere else
(because it doesn't say "reset all" and it *will* ask for confirmation). The
place you should be is described in the next paragraph.

You say, "Right click on the icon bar gives me a long list of different
bars..." - yes, and at the bottom of the list is the option "Customize...".
You want to choose that (although I thought you already had from your
description). Then go to the Toolbars" tab along the top. (The menu bar
counts as a toolbar for these purposes.)

The next best thing for you to do now is to close Word, search for the file
"normal.dot" on your computer and delete it. This will reset Word to
defaults, and you will lose all your customisations, autotext entries (I
think), etc., but should fix your problem. If you prefer, just rename it
instead to normaldot.old or something, in case you later realise there's
stuff in there you need. (It's the template file Word uses when creating a
new, blank document.)

However, based on your posts, you may be better off seeking hands-on
assistance from a knowledgeable friend, or at least try the Word newsgroup I
recommended earlier. I believe my descriptions of the steps you need to take
have been accurate and I can't really offer more advice than that which I
already have. Sorry.

PS If your desire to reinstall Office 2003 is purely to try and fix this
problem with Word, then that really is overkill and a waste of time and
energy. This problem sounds easily fixable if you can follow instructions
and provide accurate feedback.

It's probably under View; Toolbars . That's where you turn them on or
off.

You're actually OT in this group; a word group for your version of Word,
which you failed to mention, is where this belongs. Try
microsoft.public.newusers for the experts on word. Word is not part of
XP and this group is for XP, the OS, not the suite Microsoft Office, of
which Word is part of.

If you clicked the X in the upper right corner by mistake, that would
have closed the toolbar. View; Toolbars will let you turn it back on.
Then drag it to wherever you want it to be parked.

Janet,
Right-click anywhere on the top toolbar and choose 'Customize'

In the 'Customize' dialogue box, click on the top 'Commands' tab.

In the left-hand 'Categories' panel, scroll down to the item 'Built-in
Menus'.

In the right-hand pane (while still in 'Built-in Menus') click on to the
'Tools' item and DRAG it over to the top menu bar (between the 'Format'
and 'Tables' menus) and let it go.

Don't be frightened of this process - if it doesn't work (i.e. you let
it go too early) just start again.

Hope you find it all okay.

Cheers, Tim Meddick, Peckham, London. :)
