Tools>Error Checking

I am trying to run an Error Check on a 120 HD enclosed in a 2.0 USB external
case.
I am using the "Auto fix and Scan and attempt recovery of bad sectors"
options.

Problem: The check keeps getting hung-up on Phase 4, about half way through
the check. It looks like the 120G drive is still doing something (lights are
blinking), but the error check hangs up exatly halfway through Phase 4.

This is the second time this has occured and I have patiently waited about 4
hourse to make sure I was not getting overly anxious about the progress.

ALSO, will there be any harm in restarting the system to get out of this
"lock-up" the disk check is in?

I am running XP Pro SP2...all the updates installed etc..

Thanks much for any advise!

Regards,
Duane
