Too many cookies?

W

Walter R.

Running XP SP2 with IE6.

I have more than 2000 cookies on my system. Would this have a tendency to
slow down my IE6 browser?

How do I get rid of all these cookies? I assume that most of them are
obsolete.

2000 is a lot, one way to manage them is by altering the default actions.
I'd recommend you accept ( or prompt ) 1st-party cookies and disallow
all the 3rd-party ( or unaffiliated cookies with the site your visiting ).
You
modify these with Internet Options, Tools, Privacy (TAB), Advanced
(Button), Check/Tic "Override Automatic Cookie Handling" then make
your personal choices for each type of Cookie.

That is a lot and could make a difference, but you can use this tool to
manage and delete unneeded ones, along with doing other things.

CCleaner:

With that said, have you defragged lately?

You definitely need to visit Windows Updates ASAP. Your message header:

X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.2180

shows us that you are running a very old and less secure version of IE/OE.
Basically, a never patched XP/SP2 more than four years old.

No.

I don't know. Never had any reason to inquire.

Hi Bruce

Actually, my IE version is seven years old. I always avoided updates because
some people seem to have problems with them. Maybe I should give it a try.
IE6 is getting a bit clunky. Never had a problem without the updates,
though.

You may wish to consider upgrading your browser to IE7, alternatively try
Opera, FireFox or G/Chrome and your OS to SP3.
Ensure you implement correct procedures prior upgrading!

There are a lot of security updates among all the rest. It's your machine,
so the choice is yours. The updates are there for a reason. Like changing
the oil in your car's engine.

I'd worry more about the unpatched status of the machine, if I were you,
