TOC with initial phrases, not paragraphs

I would like a table of contents that has the first few words of some
paragraphs, not the entire paragraphs. To save space I don't want to make
those words into seperate paragraphs. Any solution?

I posted a response to this question about 15 minutes ago, but it didn't
appear. I'll post it again, so now you'll probably get two.

You need to create two paragraphs -- the first with the text that you want
to appear in your TOC and the second with the text that you don't want to
appear. Then format the first paragraph with a style that will be picked up
by the TOC (Heading 1, for example), and format the second paragraph with a
style that will NOT be picked up in the TOC (Body Text, for example).

Then, with your non-printing characters showing (press the ¶ key in the
toolbar if you're in 2003), select ONLY the paragraph mark for the first
paragraph and format it as hidden text. Then, when you turn off your
non-printing characters (press the ¶ key again), the two paragraphs will
appear to merge into one, but the TOC will only recognize the first paragraph.

Make sure your printer options are set so that hidden text will not print or
show on the screen, and you should be in business.

I hope this helps.

This seems to work here, under Word 03. Select that part of the
para that you want to show in the Toc and apply the Heading style
to it. In the body it will take on the Heading characteristics,
but it stays with rest of the paragraph. And the ToC picks up
only the text that was selected.
