TOC 1 & TOC 1 +

hi,
when i create a very simple table of contents, Word 2003 decides to change
the formatting of TOC 1 (left aligned) into TOC 1+ (right aligned) for - as
far as i know - no reason what so ever.
how can i get formatting right?

If you are seeing the "TOC 1 +" entry in the Styles and Formatting pane, it
indicates direct formatting in the paragraph, which should disappear the
next time you update the TOC.

If you are saying that the style has been redefined to include right-aligned
formatting, then it's because the TOC styles, by default, are set to update
automatically, which means that any direct formatting applied to a TOC entry
will be incorporated into the corresponding style. To get rid of it, you
should be able to select a TOC 1 entry and press Ctrl+L. Alternatively,
modify the TOC 1 style explicitly
(http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/styles/ModifyAStyle.html).

If neither of the above suggestions fixes the issue, post back.

hi stefan,

all chapter titles have the same Heading 1 formatting.
i got rid of all automatic updates for TOC 1, TOC 2 & TOC 3.
still, when i update the table of contents, chapters 1, 2 & 3 formatting are
correct (TOC1), but for chapter 4, Word still uses TOC1+ (when i delete this
formatting in the styles & formatting pane, it reappears when i update the
table of contents, the same goes when ik change TOC1+ into TOC1).
when i apply the format painter to the table of contents (e.g. to change
TOC1+ into TOC1), formatting is ok until i update the table of contents.
strange..

Go to the offending Heading (Chapter 4), select all the text for the heading,
then Ctrl+Spacebar. This will remove any accidental manual formatting. Then
refresh the TOC.
Have you deleted the TOC, deleted the offending style, reinsert a TOC?
Does this take care of this problem?
Also to stop seeing (but not automatic creation by Word) any such styles,
Tools, Options, Edit, uncheck Keep track of formatting.
This stop these styles from being seen on the Styles and Formatting pane but
will also turn off the Select All function from the style right click pane.
Hope this helps

Forgot to say, when you select the heading text, ensure you select the
paragraph mark as well. If you don't normally see these, the Pilcow icon
(backward facing P) or Ctrl+Shft+8 to toggle these.
