to XP64 or not

I am in the process of building a new system. I have installed my original
XP home and when I try to add SP2 (or almost any other software) I get an
'unable to complete' type message at the last moment during the installation
or get a BOD and shutdown. I can't install updates of drivers that might be
causing this as the installation trips over at the last moment (as above).
This is a bit chicken and the egg.

As this appears to be a driver issue, would buying a new XP 64 OS to replace
my very old 32bit version help?

IMHO not - instead, you would dive into new driver probs!

Identify your driver problem, do a fresh install of your XP 32bit and
upgrade to SP2...

I thought that might be the case, just hoped that the driver issues for XP
64 were a thing of the past. My problem now is curing the 32bit driver
issue. Have a feeling this a chipset issue and as I have the latest drivers
I don't know where to go next
thanks for your help

Blue screens can be driver issues and they can also be hardware
issues. If you have XP installed, go to Administrative Tools and have
a look at the event viewer to determine the error.

When XP_x64 was beta, manufacturers said they were waiting for XP_x64
going gold - and now they wait for Windows Vista to be RTM until they
produce the full range of drivers.

Reference the possible hardware issue- have you ever opened the case up and
blew out all the dust? Just something else to do to eliminate a possible
cause.

Vista is due out soon. That means MS will drop XP sooner or later
..... and 32 bit hardware isn't going to run a 64 bit OS. Also, looks
like
a bunch of new games are going to be 64 bit and Vista only.

Not only all that, eventually we'll be forced to use microsoft's drm
and secure computing, sooner we switch to vista, sooner that will be.

What games look like they'll be 64 bit and Vista only?
