I'm not sure there is a default number of prcesses on XP-the number is
dependent on the individual user and machine. I'm running about 50 at the
moment with no harm done.
In any case, you can check most processes at:
http://www.blackviper.com/
Processes not listed can be checked in Google or in Control Panel/Admin
Tools/Services.

39 processes is pretty normal. What a/v program do you have and in what
way is it not working? What versions of Spybot S&D and Ad-aware are
installed? Older versions do not update any longer, you need Spybot S&D
1.3 and Ad-aware 1.05 or higher for them to update and work. For the
processes you can do a google search to help identify some and check
www.blackviper.com for standard WinXP processes descriptions.

Do a search of the EXE on your drive. Right Click and select Properties,
Version. Most legitite programs will be labeled.

Your biggest concern should be with your antivirus and antispyware
software not working. Some of the current viruses and spyware items
do block the more popular a.v. programs and spyware cleaners.

Get Stinger from http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger and run it to clean up
your machine.

Also check out the manual update procedures for your AV software and
for AdAware. Download the necessary update files and save them to
your hard drive. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode and then install
the updates and scan your hard drive while still running in Safe Mode.

Good luck

Default number? Not really.. Depends on the install and stuff installed
later.

There are lots of services on your PC that are probably turned on by default
you don't use. Why have them on? Check out these web pages to see what all
of the services you might find on your computer are and set them according
to
your personal needs. Be CAREFUL what you set to manual, and take heed and
write down as you change things! Also, don't expect a large performance
increase or anything - especially on today's 2+ GHz machines, however - I
look
at each service you set to manual as one less service you have to worry
about
someone exploiting. A year ago, I would have thought the Windows Messenger
service to be pretty safe, now I recommend (with addition of a firewall)
that most home users disable it! Yeah - this is another one you have to
work for, but your computer may speed up and/or be more secure because you
took the time. And if you document what you do as you do it, next time, it
goes MUCH faster! (or if you have to go back and re-enable things..)

There are also applications that AREN'T services that startup when you start
up the computer/logon. One of the better description on how to handle these
