To Defragment or Not to Defragment [Popup unable to Defrag due to scheduling chkdsk /f]

Hi,

There is always something new in the wonderful world of computing.

On attempting to run Defragmenter, a popup saying something like "Disk
Defragmenter has detected that chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume
(C:\). Please run chkdsk /f ". I had not scheduled any checkdisk.

Is there something or someone causing this? I am totally clueless.

I have done the following:
**Tried running a chkdsk from a commandline, but he following boot was not
able to run the checkdisk /f.
**Installed Recovery Console...
**Read the Help files in Recovery Console for chkdsk /?
**There was no "/f" switch there. There was /p & /r .
**Attempted to use the Recovery Console to run a chkdsk /r, but the first
time at the point the Recovery Console stops at the cursor to choose the
volume to run, the "1" could not be entered.
**After this, I decided to run an Inplace Upgrade. Afterward, I was able
to enter a "1" for the volume to enter a command to run chkdsk /r.
**The chkdsk /r was successfully ran at this point, and defrag was able to
be run once. I decided to run two passes.
And guess what? Same popup again.

**Can someone give me a direction as to the cause of this phenomenon?

TIA,
don

Also found this one as above and the ones under have to do with installation
of USB printer drivers. I do not know if they had anything to do with the
problem, but it showed up before the "ntfs" system problems.

There were several other printers that were paused and then restarted after

There did not seem to cause the problem, but if you can not find anything

flyarounds and walkthroughs.

After performing an Inplace Upgrade the system regresses to the same state
when trying to run Defrag through the GUI.

Think I lucked up on an good possibility for the Defrag not being able to be

Zone Alarm Pro upgrade 5.0.590.015 stops my computer from executing Chkdsk

This event indicates that the file system has detected what it thinks is
corruption on the drive. Could possibly be a hardware failure creeping up
on you. I don't believe that printer drivers could result in the file
system thinking that there is a problem.
