~*.tmp files

My Word 2000 frequently creates files such as above which
appear to be like .bak files from previous Word versions.
And I get messages to the effect that Normal already
exists and asks if I want to overwrite it. And I put a
shortcut on my desktop so I could open directly to a
document, but it opened to a previous version. The
current version with saved changes was in my directory,
but it opened to the old version. I don't understand
what's happening. If you have an answer, you can email me
directly: (e-mail address removed). Thanks.

Word *always* creates temporary working files. This is essential. They
should, however be removed when Word is closed. If Word crashes for whatever
reason, the files should be removed manually -
