Tis the season to spend money...or is it?

I am planning on building (for the first time) my own pc sometime soon to take to uni next September. At first i assumed it would be cheapest in January because of the sales, but then i realised that i wasnt sure whether component sites had much in the way of January sales. So i wanted to check with you guys whether it was better to buy when the xmas offers are on or in January? If there is alot of left over stock then i guess it will be cheaper in January, but if there is a shortage of stuff like DDR3 ect then they may bump some prices up. Any help welcome .

Trying to decide on a budget atm, damn hard trying to stop myself spending every penny i have.
