Tiny Scanner but no image scanning software

J

JP

My gran bought a Tiny PC about 4 years ago, came with windows 98 and scanner
+ all the other crap they bundle.

I have just installed XP for her on the machine, but since doing this I have
realised that Windows XP does not come with imaging built in. The
installation CD for the scanner does not include picture scanning software,
it only has the driver and a OCR program.

I am looking for your help with this, preferably I would like a freeware
program that will do a simple scan (and/or crop) and save to JPG format.

It's got to be very easy to use as it's for my gran and she's a bit behind
when it comes to these sorts of things. I have paint shop pro which I could
install for her but I beleive this would be too complecate for her because
you have to scan, then file >save as > file type > file name, etc... it's
just too long winded for a 87 year old!

Have you got any reccomendations please
Let me know if you need any more information.

Thanks

Hard to beat IrfanView.
irfanview.com

There may be something simpler for free, but iview does an amazing lot of
functions for free.

Sorry to inform you but Windows XP *does* come with Imaging software built
into Windows Explorer already (right click on file pane and select
thumbnails or slide show (there are even a few XP Powertoys that add more
features to this function such as image re-sizing and image converting)
thereby pretty much making irfanview nearly obsolete (don't get me wrong, I
loved that program on my old 98 machine but XP has pretty much made it
useless to me, at least)

Windows XP comes with the WIA imaging applet. Usually, all you need to do is
press the scan button, or scan from any app such as PhotoFiltre. Simply
press "File,, Import TWAIN,, Select Source,, then select WIA or TWAIN and
Scan. See which works best. You will probably like your TWAIN driver better
than WIA, but it works.

Hi JP,

I can't offer you much help. These scanner utilities have been mentioned
in ACF:

Simple Copier (XP?)
http://www.neogie.com/simplecopier/

iCarbon (XP - ok)
http://www.idev.ch/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=87&func=selectcat&cat=2

Quick Copy 2 Printer (XP - no)
http://www.boss-it.nl/

SOS might have something on his site:

I'm talking about the Imaging software that actually scans in photographs
from a scanner, not a program to view photos already on the hard drive

yes but what i'm talking about is windows does not come with a built in
">select source> twain > scan" program, this is what I am requesting!

BIG thanks MAC!
This seems to be just what I am looking for, it has a very simple layout,
almost 1 click, which is perfect and seems very similar to Kodak Imaging
that came with 98

IrvanView gets my vote too. It's what I use for all my batch scanning.
I've still got a lot to learn about Photoshop, which can do a more in terms
of photo correction, but to get the images scanned in quickly and without a
lot of fuss, I use IrfanView. It's also a great slide-show viewer as well.

Yeah, the previous post dissing it, comparing to XP Explorer imaging
functions, was so absurd I didn't even respond.

The built-in program in Windows XP does do basic scanning IF you have a
twain driver for your scanner. You can get the info in XP's help and
support ran from the start button. If you have the correct driver, the
scanner will show up in the device manager. Rt-click on the scanner icon
and among the choices you will find 'Get Picture with Scanner Wizard'. This
is the built-in XP scanning program. You didn't indicate which scanner
model from Tiny you have. You may need to download the Windows XP drivers
from their site to get the system to 'see' the scanner.

I tried the device manager thing u said and the option is not there, I also
read the help and support centre but the options it describes does not
appear..

To get pictures from a scanner or digital camera

1.. Plug your camera or scanner into your computer.
2.. If your camera is Plug and Play, the Scanner and Camera Wizard starts.
-or-

If your camera is not Plug and Play or you are using a scanner,
right-click the camera or scanner from which you want to get pictures, and
then click the appropriate option for that device.

3.. Follow the instructions on your screen.
Notes

a.. To open Scanners and Cameras, click Start, click Control Panel, and
then double-click Scanners and Cameras.
b.. To work directly from your camera, click advanced users only on the
first page of the Scanner and Camera Wizard.
c.. To obtain pictures, the scanner or camera must first be installed,
turned on, and connected to your computer.
d.. To preview an image after you download it, double-click it to open it
in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

I think I will just install the Irvanview software as it seems like a good
enough program., by the way, had a look round tiny website before but no
actual scanning software, just drivers

Some of what you have described from the help section is the function of
Windows Image Acquisition (WIA), a built-in software program for scanning
and downloading of digital camera images. As you indicated, the Windows
Picture and Fax Viewer are for only viewing images. Irvanview is a great
program with expanded capabilities, but does not do the actual scanning
either.

In device manager, do you actually see the scanner in control panel>scanners
and cameras; or in My Computer do you see a icon for the scanner? If they
are not present, the scanner drivers are most likely the problem and the
scanner is not installed properly. If the scanner is a Primax FU661E, they
have XP drivers on the Tiny Support site's download page. However, they do
not have XP drivers for any other scanner models. Most scanning programs
require these twain drivers. You might try www.hamrick.com to dl a trial
version of Vuescan to see if this scanning program will work for you. This
program works without twain drivers and may/not work with your particular
scanner.

If the scanner is recognized as being installed properly, it may be the WIA
may not have been turned ON during XP installation (unlikely, but this needs
to be checked). Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services, then
scan down the list to Windows Image Acquisition. This should show status of
started and automatic. If it isn't click on this service to select, then
start or restart the service from this same window.
