Time to bootup increasing

It now, in the last 2 or 3 days, takes double the time to progress from Win
XP Home (SP2) screen to desktop. The "loading personal settings" page in the
bootup process accounts for much of the increase time. Tried System restore
without effect. Msconfig has no surprise entries. Services tab - I don't
know if anythin new has been mysteriously added. Have not installed new apps
in recent days. Your suggestions will be much appreciated.

Is your hard disk making a lot of loud noise? It could be that it's getting
to the end of it's lifecycle. When was the last time you reformatted?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

What has reformatting got to do with it?

That is the LAST resort.

Good question!

Some people think reformatting and re-installing the OS is 1) the fix
for everything, and/or 2) required every now and then to keep things
running smoothly even when not having problems.

Have you run disc-cleanup and a defrag recently?

Not sure what NTFS format compared to FAT32 does, but the last time I
read up on format (win98 days), the program would find bad spots in a
drive and mark the sectors unusable and basically map around them when
formatting. If that was the point of the format suggestion, and if
that still works, then its useful only to the point of postponement of
an eventual death.

It was a virus - win32 rootkit-gen. I didn't virus-scan before posting
because the prob couldn't have been that: I never get a virus (haw haw).

Can't see the trees for the forest huh!!! LOL

Big Al, I posted too soon re virus. First reboot after virus removal was
almost normal, but now (next day) back to slow pace. Not too long since last
defrag and disc cleanup, but will repeat that proceedure now.

|I suggest that you use a clean boot to see if third party software is

Colin, my response to yours of 4/23 didn't show (in OE or Firebird). So,
thanks. I've clean booted but am unsure that I have processed info received
thereby intelligently (knowledgeably). Prob may be Ad-aware 07. Have stopped
the service. Will see if that helps. System restore unable, before stopping
AdAware service, to resotre prior to install of that app.

This appears in Thunderbird, but not here in OE. If you replied in T_bird,
it is missing there:

Glad to see you are making progress. The system configuration tool is very
useful in figuring out what is bottlenecking a system.
