Time Synchronization Problem

G

Guest

When I try to sync my clock I get the following message: An error occurred
while Windows was synchronizing with time.windows.com. The time sample was
rejected because: The peer's stratum is less than the host's stratum.

The first response I got was due to many problems with that server,
"time.windows.com" was always the first thing to be changed on my WinXP
systems. See if this article helps "A list of the Simple Network Time
Protocol (SNTP) time servers that are available on the Internet"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/262680. When I went to that web page there
was only one site http://tycho.usno.navy.mil/ntp.html where you could
download anything that might correct the problem. After downloading Windows
could not open the downloaded file, so it was of no help.

The second response I got was Install *both* updates if not already done:

1. "Update for Windows XP (KB931836)"
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FamilyID=66f1420c-df2d-400b-a8a9-ef9061a9a3ca

2. "Update for Windows XP (KB932590)"
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FamilyID=1b38b995-a6f2-4703-95fc-f504ef4e4f39

I had previously downloaded both of the above updates and still had the
problem. I would appreciate any help in getting this issue resolved.

David, you just posted this half an hour ago in your second thread and I
just replied to it. . . I know it's frustrating when you're waiting for
an answer, but it's really better to stick to one thread.

Never mind. . .

I think the point of directing you to that Microsoft article was to have
you try some other time servers. Did you? (If you're not sure how, you
just go to Control Panel | Date and Time |Internet Time, click the
server name box to highlight it and type in the name of the new server.
Then click Update Now and see if it works :)

I am having the same problem, and switching servers does not do the trick
for me. Running standard windows firewall (anti-virus fully disabled) so
that should not be the problem. Win XP with latest updates.

I searched all over this forum and MS and got no results for this error,
sorry to have posted a duplicate but when the search says nothing found,
whats a poor boy to do.

I have the same problem, all time servers will result in the error. Old PC's
without the latest patches and PC's with all of them. Same error.

The time sample was rejected because the peers stratum is less than the
hosts stratum."

What do you mean by all servers? Which ones have you tried?

C'mon guys,

Over the past month at least a few dozen people have posted this problem
with time servers. Darn near every patch and update that Microsoft has ever
issued has been suggested as a remedy. But I have yet to see a proper reason
why the problem is occurring! Or a real "fix" for it.

Yes, a workaround is to choose other time servers. I've been able to use
time.xmission.com successfully for manual time updates. I don't know yet if
it will work for scheduled updates though.

Isn't it about "time", if you'll pardon the word, for Microsoft to look into
the issue and resolve it?

C'mon guys, what? I'm not sure what are you expecting of the folks here.
This is a peer to peer newsgroup. Everyone posting here is a volunteer
offering their assistance with problems. If you want some input from MS
contact their tech support through the normal channels.

Am I the only one who finds this to be a curious situation?

I suspect that most of the posts are coming from the same bozo.

Rock,

I didn't mean to criticize anyone here. I just mean that someone at
Microsoft should really look into it after so many people posting the same
problem. (And I suspect that many more have the same problem but aren't aware
of it. They don't manually sync. or read their error reports.) Even if it's
not caused by them, M/S could offer some help.

I've written them about it a few times. Guess what. No answer!

No problem, Milt. I didn't mean to imply nor think you were criticizing
anyone here. I just thought you might have thought this was MS tech
support. Some posters think that's the case, and expect an MS employee to
respond. Sorry if there was a misunderstanding.

Just read a post here:
http://channel9.msdn.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=300915
that seems to explain the problem with time.windows.com:

Nightowl,

Thanks for showing me the post. I've pretty much come to the same
conclusions stated there. That's why I'm more than a little annoyed that M/S
doesn't seem interested in looking into it. I feel that they have some
responsibility, since neither of the default time servers that they installed
in WinXP work. And further, as I said earlier, many people are affected by
the problem and just don't realize it. (I know that other time servers will
work. But most people will not figure that out.)

Hi Milt

Yes, I understand what you're saying, and I agree. As I'm in the UK I've
always used a local time server and so luckily haven't been affected,
but I'm seeing the same problem posted in forums and groups all over.
Many users won't have an idea what a time server is or realise there are
many others they could try; they just think their Windows is broken :-(
Surely MS could at least *tell* people the servers aren't working and
what to do about it. . .
