Time sync, Updates, and Media Center

G

Guest

Using WinXP SP2. I can't get my time to sync. It works when I unregister it
and reregister. Then it will display error message "the handle is
invalid...etc" after everytime I open Media center 2005 or Micrsoft Update.
Which brings me to my next problem. I am thinking these are interconnected
somehow because I can't keep my time synced, my media center will not connect
to the internet to download the guide and my microsoft updates always brings
up an error of "0x80072F78". Honestly I have tried EVERY posted fix from the
newsgroups, including the microsoft 'supposed'fix for this error and still
the same. So is it the time error causing the other problems? One more thing
I updated my bios to A09 a month ago, it crashed my computer, (I know I
shouldn't update bios unless theres a problem I know I know) I fixed it
myself by just removing the mainboard battery and reinserting it (phew) so I
am wondering if this is causing my problems cause I haven't been able to fix
this problem since then. Did something fry when it crashed? How could I tell?
Everything else works, I am running a cable modem with a splitter to connect
the media center and internet. IE6 works fine. I have tried each solution
with and without Nortons firewall enabled. Please any help would be
appreciated.

Tried your suggestion and still nothing. No media Center, no updates and time
still won't sync. I have been working on this for weeks, I am so ready to
grab a hammer....
Anyway thanks for your input. Any other suggestions?
BTW the error is an "Installation error" I go to microsoft updates, push
express, or custom (doesn't matter) see the updates listed to download, click
on install, box comes up trying to download said updates, each one fails.
Close box go to "Review update history" click on red x status and error
message comes up in that as to why download failed.

Please, DO NOT post the entire log or I'll fall asleep ;)

Is the system on a network, which Symantec "product" is installed, and,
was the system ever able to successfully do Windows Updates ?

Didn't work. There's a new error just above that old error (thats still there)

2006-11-15 23:18:54 1380 9bc DnldMgr * Update is not allowed to download
due to regulation.

Posted some more log, took a few bits out that didnt apply. Anyway I have 2
questions more. 1. Some programs are dependant on certain services right,
well Everything works on my computer but 3 different things. I can download,
visit any site, blahdy blah etc BUT I cannot get windows update, media center
to connect to the internet and download the guide, and sync my time using
internet time in date and time properties. So are these things all related to
BITS? are they related in any way or is it just a coincidence they all
stopped working at the same time?.
2. I got a new cable modem a month ago when this all started and called it
in to register it with comcast my isp. Can they block services, filter, not
add something right to the configuration?
Hey just grabbing at straws right now (have no hair left) Oh I totally
removed Norton Firewall and then tried the suggestions. What btw in the error
msg points towards NSW? Just interested. Thanks for your help. Please help
more :)

BITS has been damaged by it. Try repairing it by -

" To reinstall the Background Intelligent Transfer Service, follow these
steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type the following command, and then click OK
(OR, copy&paste the below into the Open: field) :

%windir%\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection
DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\inf\qmgr.inf

If SP2 was installed by you -

If you are prompted to insert your operating system CD, type the
following path in the Copy files from box, and then click OK:
%windir%\ServicePackFiles\i386
** Note ** This location contains the most recently updated service
pack files. If you cannot use this path to copy the required files from,
insert your operating system CD, and then click OK.

IOW, if SP2 came on the XP CD, then just insert the CD.

For more steps on reinstalling/repairing BITS, please see -
http://www.castlecops.com/postlite106642-bits.html

To prevent this from occurring in the future, suggest you uninstall NSW
when the subscription expires and install a *dependable*
security/antivirus product.
