I think that the $500 is not how much the developer makes, but the labor and
burden rate for the company. You have to pay, in the US, social security,
health insurance, unemployment insurance, etc., etc., so the cost of having
that guy work on a Date/Time control, rather than buying one for $500 is an
easy choice, in most cases.

There's an opening in the market there! You should code up a great
Date/Time control. Seems like it will get an enthusiastic reception.
