time/date stamp

I have a worksheet that I would like to place a time/date
stamp on as data is entered. I have used the "now" (=IF
(ISBLANK(B1)," ", NOW())) function to do this, but
unfortunately, every time I enter data, excel recalculates
the whole sheet. I end up with a list of stamps that only
reflect the last entered data. Is there a better way to
perform this function, or will I need to write a macro to
copy and paste the value to another cell where it will be
safe?
