Tiff versus JPEG

I recently read that saving an image in high quality (low compression) JPEG format is just as good as saving it as a
TIFF. Can anyone give me any feedback on this. The JPEGS are so much smaller in file size that I worry about loss of quality.

Depends on your final use for the picture. If all you
will be doing is making up to 5 X 7 prints or using the
pictures on the internet HQ-JPG seems to be fine. On the
other hand you want your best possible output TIFF is
definately the better of the 2.

Look at his comment on "Raw Files" VS JPG which are even
better than TIFF.

Not all compression algorithms are lossless. This means
that information is lost during image compression and
cannot be reconstructed during decompression. For
example, the popular JPEG format does not use a lossless
compression algorithm and LOOSES image information when
images are compressed.

On the other hand, formats like the Tagged Image File
Format (tiff) can be compressed without any image
degradation.

Raw format can sometimes be preferable, as the camera
processor does not correct and modify the image. The
downside of such a format is that it typically requires
proprietary software to extract the image.

JPG VS TIFF Tiff every time
