Thunderbird Email v.05 (released - 2004-02-09)

R

REM

I missed the new version for two months... sorry if this has already
been stated.

This is a pretty large program (~7.5 meg Win d/l) and older systems
might not run it as well as my newer system does. I really, really
like this email program though, after using Netscape v4.79 Mail since
it came out.

This program:

Will not allow any executions (worms, virus, etc.) within the program.
The user must save an attachment and execute it by normal means.

HTML is sanitized. No web bugs, links to external photos, etc. occur.

Has an exceptional spam filtering. After training the program for a
week or two very little, if any, spam will find its way to your
screen.

Has versions for Windows, Linux and Mac. This version includes
features to share mailboxes within dual boot systems.

Never trashcans a message from anyone in your address book (white
listing).

Rocks.

"Upgraders: DO NOT install Mozilla Thunderbird into a directory
containing program files from a previous version. Overwriting files
from a previous release WILL cause problems. To re-use the directory
of a previous install, the directory must be deleted and recreated,
emptied, moved, or renamed. You should not file bugs in Bugzilla if
you choose to ignore this step."

"New Features:
We now support the notion of multiple identities per mail account.
This makes it easy to have several email addresses which end up going
into the same account. Read More about how to hook this up.

Thunderbird 0.5 includes Secure Password Authentication using a new
cross-platform NTLM authentication mechanism for POP3 and SMTP.

Option to turn on the Mozilla 1.x style folder columns in Thunderbird
(Tools / Options / Advanced / General Settings).

A new Palm Sync Address book conduit is now available for 0.5. You can
now do a one way sync, PC -> Palm or Palm -> PC, by changing the hot
sync conduit setup. We now prevent duplicate cards in Thunderbird
address books when syncing with Palm categories. Numerous improvements
with the initial sync.

A new, improved version of the offline extension is now available for
0.5. Please read the installation notes in this document about how to
first uninstall old extensions.

Improved Spell Checker including a new US dictionary.

Ability to paste names or addresses from a spreadsheet directly into
the addressing widget of a new compose window.

Improved profile migration from Netscape 4.x.

Recently Fixed Bugs
If a new message arrives while you are reading a message, we no longer
scroll the message body back to the top.

When saving an IMAP attachment, we no longer re-download the
attachment from the server.

Saving an attachment now brings up a standalone progress window.

Copying a message to a Sent Folder now shows progress in the progress
window.

When saving or opening an attachment, the progress dialog now reports
accurate progress information.

We now mark IMAP messages read in a folder if they are deleted or
moved to another folder. This fixes incorrect unread counts when
checking folders other than the Inbox for new messages.

LDAP searches now honor the directory search filter property.

Ability to paste a single cell of data from Microsoft Excel into the
compose window body.

Problems with IMAP folders three levels deep not showing up when you
are not using the IMAP subscription model.

Tools / Options / Attachments / Attachment Folder setting is now
remembered.

Linux builds no longer crash when viewing HTML messages requiring a
JAVA plugin.

Improved handling of apple double encoded attachments from OSX
clients.

No more new mail alert notifications when all incoming messages are
Junk.

"Remove from server after x days" has been implemented for POP3 mail
accounts.

Performance Improvements
Faster folder loading.

Improved Stability and Polish
This release is based on the Mozilla App-Suite 1.6 final branch and
includes all of the stability work that went into Mozilla 1.6."

It's not bad at all, though still a tad buggy v. 0.6, to be released in
a few weeks, should be much improved. I still prefer Mozilla Mail &
News, the more stable program on which Thunderbird is based.

You're absolutely right. I have tried countless
e-mail programmes, both share and freeware.
Until recently the (inexpensive) PocoMail was my
number one, but Thunderbird is really the very
best e-mail program to use.
Can't wait to see what they have in store for us
with 0.6!

I am using 0.5 and am very happy, but a little worried about a
few anomolies. I have trawled the forums, but where does one
find news about when a new version is due?

Thanks for raising the comparison with PocoMail; very interesting.

I've used PocoMail for a number of years now and have been very happy
with it -- my e-mail needs are not very complex -- but I've noticed a
couple of oddities now and then, and have wanted to keep any eye out
for a future alternative (in case I need it).

I've pretty well switched over to Firefox after using a paid-for IE
shell for the last year[1], so I really must give Thunderbird a trial
run...

[1] The IE shell was "iRider" -- it's got some really excellent
features, but I suspect it'll eventually be faced with the unresolvable
problem that most people refuse to pay for a browser -- let alone one
that uses IE as the rendering engine.

Firefox is solely a browser: for email and news you need to use
Thunderbird (or OE whatever you prefer; in my case, I use PocoMail for
email, and Xnews for news).

The concept behind Firefox and Thunderbird is to de-merge the elements
of the Mozilla "suite" -- of browser/mail/news -- and to have separate,
dedicated programs for each function. That approach isn't to
everyone's taste: people who use an integrated browser/mail/news
program may find it weird and cumbersome to fire up separate programs
to open the mail or read newsgroups. Speaking as one who prefers to
use separate programs for each function, though, Firefox works very
well as a browser for me.

(FWIW, I don't feel that there's a "better" or "worse" in this issue --
the choice of integrated vs separate programs is very much a case of
horses and courses.)

If you want a browser suite that contains software for email and
newsgroups (and a whole lot more) go to
http://www.mozilla.org/
The stable version, 1.6 is quite good. I've been using 1.7 beta with no
complaints. 1.7 final will be released sometime in May.

In that case Thunderbird is worth a look, but you might want to wait for
the 0.6 release some time in May. It will be a lot better than the
current 0.5.
