I know at one point everything worked fine. Then I started having the
system hang at shutdown and startup. After looking in to it I found
that if I disconnected the USB cable going to the Canon MP390 printer
everything worked fine.
In device manager I found a warning symbol for the USB port the MP390
was on. It showed "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". When I
disconnect the USB printer cable the warning goes away.
I tried the following with no luck:
* XP Help and Support troubleshooter
* Uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them both with the original
ones I got with the printer and the ones from the Canon website
* Different cables
* Different USB ports
I contacted email support from Canon. They came back with:
Please use these steps to start the MPService:
1. Click OK on the displayed error message.
2. From the Windows desktop, click Start, right-click My Computer and
then select Manage.
3. At the Computer Management window, double-click Services and
Applications.
4. Double-click Services on the right-hand pane.
5. Right-click MPService and then select Start.
6. Right-click on the MultiPASS Status Monitor and then select
Reconnect.
This actually made sense since I had been messing around with some of
the services trying to free up resources and streamline performance. I
was using "The Ultimate Troubleshooter" to guide me. I thought that I
had possibly disabled something that was needed to allow the USB
connection to start.
I went to the Computer Management/Services area as directed, but could
not find the entries for MPService or Multipass status monitor.
The printer works fine except for this hangup at shutdown and startup.
I have to force a manual shutdown to get thru it.
Can someone give me an idea how to troubleshoot further? I really want
to get this thing working correctly again. Thanks.
