This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way

Hi. Since yesterday, in Windows explorer, each time I click on a folder
I get (usually)

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library - Program C:\Windows\Explorer.exe
- Abnormal Program Termination

and sometimes I get "This application has requested the Runtime to
terminate it in an unusual way" (I haven't been able to determine a
pattern as to when does one show and when does the other - it seems
random to me), and than crash.

a. I have scanned my system thoroughly for viruses/malware, etc
b. No matter how I configure explorer, it still occurs.
c. I read on MS's site about "This application has requested the
Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way" that "This problem may occur
when you use the /GR and the /MD compiler switches, and the version of
the Msvcrt.dll file and of the Msvcirt.dll file is 7.0.x." I have
checked on my backup HD and in January I had the same versions of this
files as now (7.0.2600.2180).
d. If I right-click in explorer and select Explore From Here, it opens
another window and it usually does NOT crash. If I select "Expand", of
course, it crashes.
e. I have not installed anything in the last two months except the new
version of yahoo messenger 8.0.
f. This yahoo messenger is *very* shaky, but it worked almost fine,
without damaging my system until yesterday.
g. I have tried System Restore.
h. I have a windows explorer look-alike, only richer, which still works
fine.
i. IE works fine
j. I have uninstalled all things yahoo. No result.
k. I cannot unregister/register these two dlls - message is "DLL
register server entry point was not found".
l. These files have a "DateModified" of 2004. They are fine. It must be
something else.
m. Explorer cannot do anything anymore, not even a file search.
n. I have not programmed anything lately on this computer (dotnet or
other), and the problem just showed up yesterday.
o. I am a programmer for a living, and I do take good care of this
computer - no funny websites browsing, no wares, etc.

I suspect that somehow I got a dll conflict... but which one ?

Thank you very much for any idea - I would really not enjoy a week of
reinstalling/reconfiguring everything.
