Third Party Defrag Utilities

Are third party defrag utilities any better than what is built into XP
PRO?
I do not need scheduling capabilities or the ability to defrag in the
background.
If the answer is 'yes'; which is suggested?

I have recently noticed that when I use 'Explore', and click on an
empty folder off the root of 'c:', that there is a delay before the
right hand window is refreshed. Defragging using XP PRO did not
improve this speed. Will a third party utility improve this speed?

TIA.

Absolutely. Diskkeeper or Raxco PerfectDisk are much better than the
crippled built-in stuff.

Both of the above are good.

Doubtful, although it can make everything a bit faster. If you have Explorer
open (two panes) and click on the folder on the left side, does this happen?
Does it happen with other (and non-empty) folders? Is this the only thing
that seems especially sluggish/weird?

I definately noticed the effect in my c:\temp directory. I use it (as
the name implies) to store files that are not needed for more than a
few minutes. So, over the years, it has seen many files being created
and deleted.
Thinking back to some of the older file systems that I have used over
the years - do NTFS folder *structures* themselves need to be
defragged (as opposed to the files)?
The sequence of events is right click on Start / Explore.
Two windows open.
Navigate to the c:\temp folder and left click.
The right hand window is slow to refresh.

I would say that other disk related activity is also sluggish.
The effect is not 100% consistent as right now I can explore the 'c:
\temp' without a problem.
Possibly a cache having been loaded?

Generally yes, third-party defraggers are better. I use and like Perfect
Disk.

That's not to say that the built-in one is inadequate. It works and it's OK.

Probably not.

1st thing I'd do is create a partition & move Temp & TIF into it so
fragmented files dont have effect on important stuff in C:

Any advice is my attempt to contribute more than I have received but I can only assure you that it works on my PC. GOOD LUCK.

Interesting idea.
Thank you.

Generally 3rd party defragmenters do a better job and have more
capabilities, however, it is unlikely they will make any difference in how
the system runs in general, and affect the problem you relate in particular.
The in built defragmenter is adequate.

Odd, my PC's behavior indicates all partitions were polled during the bootup
process.

Is mine different than the majority, or is the OP's the exception?
