There was an error when printing started.... Outlook and HP Printers

A

Adam Thompson

Hi all,

I have a very odd problem with a few machines running OL98 (I have read
of.
As soon as they try to print in Outlook, they get an error saying
"There was an error when printing started. To check the printer setup,
double-click the Printers icon in Windows Control Panel. This happens
on tasks and notes, as well as emails.

The printer(s) are LJ1300s and LJ4200s. I can get it to print to them
using the 'Generic / Text Only' driver, but it gives the same error
wether I try PCL 5e/6/PostScript drivers, and even if I try to use a
LaserJet III or 4000 driver. Exactly the same error.

Other applications aren't affected - it's only Outlook. I have tried
nuking Outlprnt and the
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Outlook\Printing key - but to no
avail.

Regmon/Filemon captures don't seem to show anything out of the ordinary
happening. It looks like the driver file being used is hpzui3xy.dll,
but if there were some kind of bug between that and Outlook, surely
somebody would have noticed by now?

Any ideas would be most gratefully appreciated,

Adam.
