"There is no disc in the drive"

I received this message in CD Writing Wizard attempting to write a file on a
Sony DVD-RW disc. During research I came across article 818733, "Windows XP
does not recognize a DVD-RW disc", which seems to fit my issue. The
resolution suggests obtaining latest Windows XP service pack, which I did,
(XP2) and issue is still with me. It also said there was a hotfix which I
tried to get via support, but when support checked my pc, it tells me to go
to manufacturer. Toshiba says its MS XP problem. I'm on my 43 hour of
research and quickly losing my hair. Help?

I have the same problem, however with my CD burner. I don't think is a
manufacturer issue, as I have a Dell with a build in burner and can not burn
CD in windows xp either.

Windows xp claims that burning cds should be possible without a 3rd party
software, so they should help resolving this issue.

I saw this issue on a Desktop that I upgraded from Windows 2000 to
XP Pro. The 2000 had EasyCD Creator which had to be uninstalled
before installing XP. After the upgrade any attempt to use the native
burning would give the message about No Disk. I checked through
the Registry and could never track it down. The proper key was set
to enable burning. Finally, installed the free CDBurnerXP Pro and it
would burn either CD-R or RW's. I haven't had a chance to revisit
the problem but something with native XP burning was corrupted or
perhaps a remnant of EasyCD Creator was the cause.

It worked! Thank you.

By the way, I noticed a trend that the MS MVP Windows - Shell/User people
usully refer to google! That's easy! But, really why does the windows xp
burner does not work as advertised?

What worked the application or Google ?

Why it did not work is likely attributed to Q&A

I appreciate everyone's help so far. Unfortunately, the CDBurner XP download
did not work for me. I now get an error message via them that says "No media
inserted in the selected device. Please insert a recordable media and try
again". It still isn't recognizing my disc.
I know it's not a hardware problem because other discs are able to be read
and downloaded. I can't seem to get the files burned onto the disc. Any
other ideas?

Thanks in advance for your help with this.

I have also had a problem similar to yours. I have a lead to the problem
driver files but not a solution. We upgraded from ME to XP home. Like
another poster, our old version of Adaptec Easy CD Creator would not work
anymore so I uninstalled it, and decided to use Windows Media Player to burn
audio CDs. We only have a CD-RW. I can burn but was getting a warning
(independently of burning CDs) that two driver files were being prevented
from downloading because they were obsolete, so I thought I would delete
them. They were Roxio files and obviously associated with the Adaptec
product. I had originally left them when uninstalling because my system said
they were shared, would I like to save them, won't cause any problems if I
do, yadda yadda yadda. I saved them. The two driver files in question are
cdralw2k.sys and cdr4_2k.sys. Now, I went to put an audio CD into the
player on the computer and the computer wouldn't even see that drive much
less the CD. I have restored my computer to an earlier point and everything
works fine except I have a phantom Adaptec Create CD icon in my taskbar
notification area but I can RW. I also cannot find an easy and free driver
file for my LG Electronics for Compaq CD-RW CED-8120B. So I did the
restoration.

My problem is fixed. I don't know if it is the same issue. After using
system restore for XP, I reloaded my old Adaptec Easy CD Writer software with
known compatability issues, on top of my existing corrupted Easy CD (the one
that was causing problems when I would try to uninstall it) then uninstalled
it. I didn't even get a request to save any shared files or anything.
Everything's gone, and now my CD player works and I can burn just fine using
Media Player.
