Themes Appear Broken

Guest

I am running an XP Service Pack 2 box with the newest updates. Here is a
screen shot of what happens when the machine is running the XP Default theme:

It does it only with the XP theme. I have tried replacing the
WINDOWS\Resources\Themes folder with a known good copy and got the same
results. I am currently running diagnostics to make sure its not a hardware
issue (have not seen any other symptoms that would indicate this). Anyone
have any ideas?

Thank you.

Hello,

Hope that this issue can be resolved.

In addition to the ways suggested here (especially with using
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm )
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...read/thread/732aba492c4bd9cf/b5e8c3fc905df47e

you might want to run SFC to verify system file integrity. You will need to
have your XP disc handy.
Start > Run > SFC /SCANNOW > OK

The system integrity checked out fine. I'm currently running a defrag and
hardware diagnostics. I think the problem runs deeper than a corrupted theme
file as I replaced the themes directory with a known good copy. Is there
another directory aside from Windows\Resource\Themes where theme files are
located?

I ran the taskbar plus fix and this fixed the taskbar problem. Now the
computer barely runs at all. I checked task manager and nothing is taking up
system resources more than normal. I can't even get it to go to the MMC to
turn off the themes service. Explorer completely hangs as does trying to use
the MMC. I am on the verge of a format/install and would prefer to actually
fix the problem instead of starting over from scratch if at all possible.

Thanks.

Hello,

Check Event Viewer for clues if the Task Manager shows that no process is
using up all the CPU.

Start > Run > eventvwr.msc > OK
