Theme vs template

I am new to FP. I have created my website (www.integralyogastudio.com)
using one of the existing themes in FP. I would like to add a small box
to the right side of each page so I can put google ads there. I don't
seem to have a way in my current design to add a box like that. What is
the different between a theme and a template. Do I have more control on
a template than a theme? I would appreciate any help. Thanks.
