The user profile service failed the logon

I started Vista this evening and was greeted with this message when I tried
to log in:

"The user profile service failed the logon"

Fortunately I found a solution involving editing the user SID in the
registry while in SAFE mode. That was a big relief since I was not looking
forward to restoring from an image. I can post the details of the fix if
anyone is curious, but at the moment I'm wondering if anyone knows what
causes this?
