The Page Cannot Be Displayed

Bill

I've been helping a friend of mine with computer problems,
but something I did broke her Internet connection. She has
a Compaq Presario laptop with Windows ME and IE6.
Everywhere she tries to go with IE, she gets "page cannot
be displayed", "cannot find server", or "Internet Explorer
cannot open the search page" errors. In addition, she
can't fetch her e-mail with Outlook Express.

I've tried troubleshooting TCP/IP, and I've found that I
can ping Web sites by IP address. I can also ping a site
by name if there is an entry for it in her local Hosts
file, but not otherwise. However, IE just won't go
anywhere, including sites defined in the Hosts file.
Uninstalling and reinstalling Dial-Up Networking didn't
help, either. And I've run through her setup with her ISP
support techs, and I think it's correct.

At first I thought the AntiVir utility from free-av.com I
had installed on her computer had caused the problem. I
have since uninstalled it. But after reading the info at
mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm, a suggestion I found in
several replies to similar posts, I now believe the
culprit was some piece of spyware I removed using Spybot
Search and Destroy that same day. I'll give the Winsock
repair tools I found there a try when I get the chance.
But I'm wondering - is it really a Winsock problem, since
I'm able to ping? What other possibilities are there? Her
system is unstable; apps are prone to freezing up after
her system has been running a few minutes.

Thanks.
