The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file '(unknown)'.

V

Vera Cabanus

After 3 days I finally got all the webs from my ISP, however one gives me
error:

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'
[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] The Microsoft Jet database engine
cannot open the file '(unknown)'. It is already opened exclusively by
another user, or you need permission to view its data.

/2003-Y2000/global.asa, line 121

I created the ODBC and it checks O.K. when I click on verify in FP.
Running Windows XP PRO, FP2002, FP2002 ext., Access 2000.

I have two other webs with database that work just fine. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

Could it be that you had the database open in Access at the time? Whenever
you have a table designer or query designer window open, Access takes
exclusive control of the database. The answer is to close all windows in
Access.

This is accessed only through website and no other database is opened.
I also tried to create a new dummy db web site and this gets the following
error:

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'
[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Operation must use an updateable
query.

Are placing the database in the fpdb folder, and then let FP create the
connection?

Yes, by default DB is placed in the fpdb folder, I created the DNS
connection manually.
I got it now; Had to go to control panel and uncheck "simple file sharing"
in file folder; than right click on the fpdb folder and in a security tab
selected Read & Write for users.
I just wonder what this did to my security.....

That's a permissions error. The folder that contains your database
must grant Change permissions to the anonymous Web account (usually
IUSR_<computername> for ASP pages or ASPNET for ASP.NET pages.

Normally, creating a FrontPage database connection sets the correct
permissions automatically.

Nothing other than give you more control over individual file permissions as
far as I can tell.

Really stupid question but has the acutally database got the "Read Only"
box ticked when you right click the Database and select properties.

Only a suggestion, I was getting the exact same error - however mine was
locally run, not through a web browser.

Laters...........
