the letter "i" capitalizes without warning

In using Word 2003 a new challenge has transpired.

As my assistant editor and I edit article for our newspaper, lower case i
come out as capital I. This can occur in the middle of a sentence or the
beginning of a word.

Per another question on your site, I have tried: clearing the "Capatalize
first letter of sentence"check box from the Tools -> AutoCorrect form? Also,
try changing the grammar setting on the Spelling & Grammar tab of the Tools
->Options form. Click the Settings button under Writing Style. Clear the
check box for Capitalization
under Grammar:

These did not work.

I'm hoping you might have a simple solution I haven't considered.

Thank you.

There's an entry in the AutoCorrect list of substitutions that
specifically changes a lone lower-case i to capital I. This is
separate from the "capitalize first letter of sentence" option, which
would capitalize any letter that Word perceives as the beginning of a
sentence. It is also not new in Word 2003 -- it's been in that list as
long as there has been an AutoCorrect feature!

Remove that entry and stop worrying about it. Or, if you want the
correction to happen most of the time but not always, you can hit Undo
(Ctrl+z) immediately after the replacement occurs to reverse it.
