The best file search utility?

Windows Vista's file search is maybe for just casual searches, not for
serious searches. I often need to find files with various criteria
such as file size, date or string in the text and so on. Is there any
file search utility that you would recommend? Thanks.

You may want to check "Agent Ransack":

I thought Vista search distinguished itself as more than just casual, and
when I read up on "Federated Search" in Win 7, maybe I'll appreciate the
distinction.

While there are many, I like DX Hog Hunt. You might have to use a web
archive site to locate it, because it's not available on the site that used
to offer it, and they've remade the site and it is written in Dutch.

I've found the download by searching in a web archive. It does a great job
of breaking down folders and files specifically by size and several other
criteria. It has a price compatible with multinational companies who are
stealing out of your pocket courtesy of Timmy Geithner who facilitates
Goldman Sachs getting bonuses on the backs of blue collar and middle class
workers and causing cosmic level poverty--it's free.

Best,

I use the search utility within Total Commander. It is pretty much
customizable as a person sees fit.

In fact, complex queries work very well in Windows Search and are faster
than with the 3rd-party alternatives. Here's an example query for the
string "Windows" that limits the file type, size and date:

windows ext:txt size:1KB..100KB modified:lastweek

Many other criteria can be added. Details are found here:
