Hi Guys

im buying a new TFT Monitor for my PC on Sunday
luxhello.gif

my current 18" iiyama just wont turn on, it was fine the other day.....
turnt it on today and its DEAD, no power light or anything, had it for just over 4 years now.... cant understand why it would just die on me
i tried another power lead and still NOTHING, wondering if a fuse has gone inside it, and is it EASY to fix?

anyway, it has always been plugged in from the VGA socket on my PC to the DVI connector on the monitor itself

i am wanting to buy this on Sunday
http://www.amazon.co.uk/L226WTQ-Wide...f=pd_rhf_p_t_2

i dont play games at all, just watch a lot of dvds, web surfing, microsoft word etc

im really confused though, this new monitor has a DVI-D input

what cable do i need to go from my VGA output on my PC to this new monitor and its DVI-D input??

does such a cable exist?

i take it that my existing VGA to DVI cable wont be compatible with the DVI-D input?

can anyone help me with all this technical stuff?
please.gif

eternally grateful

To run the monitor using it's DVI-D input you will need a digital output (same socket) from your video card, it won't run from an analogue (VGA) output.

However, that monitor also has a D-Sub input which is very likely a 15 pin VGA socket which will interface with your video card. Check with the supplier first or look the model up at LG's site.

You will need a VGA to VGA cable though.

PS: For another tenner you could get a Samsung 22".

also, ideally.. i was looking for a TFT monitor with height adjustment, none i can find have this.....

i will order online probably, best way to go for price i would imagine?

also, i just looked at my stoneage graphics card, and decided to replace it

I think the Samsung's better, yes, but there again I'm biased ;)

Cheaper from Here than at Play.com

There's nothing wrong with the LG though, it's a good monitor.

The 8500GT card will be fine for non gaming stuff.

You'll get a DVI lead and a VGA lead with the Samsung, no need to waste eighteen pounds.

I've already commented on the video card, it will suit you fine.

You won't be disappointed with the Samsung, it looks great and the issue is quality of picture, not whether it's more suited to gaming or not.

And you have a choice of several settings for the Samsung as well, available both from the software that comes with it (which isn't really needed) or from the front menu buttons.

oh ok then

but as im replacing my graphics card with one that has DVI socket on it, should i get a DVI to DVI cable to get better picture quality, i thought VGA wasnt as good or crisp for the picture?

Perhaps you should read a little slower ;)

Only advantage of the lead you linked to is it's gold plated and whilst better, I'd wager money you won't be able to tell the difference between using that lead and the one that comes with the monitor.

But, if you want to buy it, buy it, it's your cash.

no problems then, i just assumed these gold cables were worth it? or is it all hype and media rubbish?

you said i get a cable with it?
did you mean use the cable supplied which has a DVI on one end and VGA socket on the other?
does that graphics card i ordered have VGA output then?
i will go and check

i just thought DVI to DVI was better than DVI to VGA?

sorry if i appear a bit dumb, im just not "technically" minded, lol

A gold plated cable will give you a better connection but as I said I doubt if you'll see any difference at all.

Yes I did say you get a cable with it. Twice :wall:

If you're going to use that video card you listed then use the DVI to DVI cable and yes it is a better connection than VGA.

If you're going to use your old video card use the VGA to VGA cable that comes with the monitor.

The card you've linked to looks as if it has both DVI & VGA output from the picture although a VGA output isn't listed in the spec.

My brain hurts, I'm going shopping :D

yeah ok, no need to take the mick! lol
i told you i aint got a clue

anyway, just checked the back of the new monitor and it has a DUAL DVI input, the Graphics Card has a DVI-D output

so i just go to PC world and ask for a DVI - DVI cable?

what does Dual DVI mean on the monitor then?
aint got a clue what it means, sorry!
and what does DVI-D mean?

im confused by all these different DVI connections such as DVI-A, DVI-D etc etc etc

All you need to know is that if you buy that monitor and that video card, the DVI lead that comes with the monitor will suffice to make a good connection between the two.

There is no need to buy anything else.

Not even at PC World.

Nor even at Tescos.

If you don't buy a new video card and just a new monitor, then use the VGA lead that comes with the monitor to connect them together.

Let me make a suggestion.

Go to W H Smiths.

Purchase a notebook.

Browse this thread and make pertinent notes.

Before asking questions here again consult notes in recently purchased notebook.

Once observed, congratulate yourself on how clever you are for taking notes, feel chuffed you actually understand them and feel all warm and gooey inside knowing you don't have to spend more hard earned cash on connecting cables.

Sometimes life is absolutely groovy isn't it? :)

Look, just buy that stuff and hook it up when it arrives ok? And stop worrying ;)
