Text won't resize to fit placeholder

I am using Powerpoint 2000 on a Gateway PC. I was working on some ppt
presentations at home, after having started them using Powerpoint 2003
at work.
The problem is, when I work on the presentations at home, the "autofit
text to placeholder" option doesn't seem to be working. I have checked
the box to enable it, but even so, it doesn't seem to have any effect.
If I click to highlight the placeholder, I don't get the autofit buttom
popping up like I did in PPT 2003. And if I shrink or expand the
placeholder, the text just stays the same size, extending outside the
box.

Any ideas why this is happening?

The autofit in PPT 2000 doesn't seem to be as intrusive, errrr, as sensitive
as the autofit in PPT 2002 and 2003. It seems to only shrink the text for
the first couple of bullet points -- or maybe it shrinks only a percentage
of the placeholder's font size or something -- and it doesn't change the
line spacing.

Also, the autofit button thing that pops up is new to PPT 2002, as is the
text expanding/shrinking when you change the size of the placeholder. PPT
2000 doesn't have those features.
