Text entering problem in dialogue boxes

Just lately I have noticed that when entering text into a dialogue box where
it normally says "enter text here" instead of the text disappearing leaving
a flashing cursor when clicked on, the text disappears but the cursor also
disappears and I find myself typing away to find I have not entered anything
when I look up.

What could cause this. It has only just started and I can't remember loading
anything. I have run latest updated version of Norton/Symantec but still the
same.

Please help as it is sooooo annoying
