Test environment for ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider

Hi,
I am using ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider for authentication. In my
development environment I don't have any Active Directory available for
development and test. Basically my development environment is a windows xp
laptop.

I am trying to avoid running a domain controller on my laptop. What would
be the easiest way to develop and test my application without running a
domain controller on my laptop?

Can I configure ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider against a stand alone
server?

Any help would be appreciated,
Max

Hi Max,

From your description, you're developing an ASP.NET which will use AD
membershp provider(forms authentication), however, your dev machine is a
standalone xp box, you're wondering how to make the authentication work,
correct?

Based on my understanding, for ADmembership provider, it must work in a
domain environment, since all its implementation are based on LDAP query.
For your scenario, if the dev environment is a non-domain standalone box,
you might consider the following approaches:

1. build some VPC images to simulate the DOMAIN environment. This will help
fully test AD membership feature

2. If only a standalone box, I'm afraid you have to use other membership
provider(suc has the default sqlmembership provider) at development stage.
And switch to ADmembership provider after you've developed most of the
functionality or have a domain environment server for test. ASP.NET
membership provider is designed flexible enough that you won't need much
changes for switching providers.

Sincerely,

Steven Cheng

That is something I had in mind. Thank you Zorba.

I guess there is no way to receive LDAP service based on stand alone machine
users correct?
