term serv client printing

Howard Miller

A ts client wants to print to their local printer. I
installed the same type of printer on the win 2000 server,
and used the TS session port. Thus, the printer remains
on 2000 server and doesn't get deleted when the user logs
off/disconnects. However, client powers on server every
morning, and that printer always is reset to "use printer
offline". This makes sense, because the ts client hasn't
dialed in yet. However, even when they do, 2000 server
still leaves the printer in offline mode, and clent can't
print. I have to install the printer this way because
the session id in the printer queue may change, and the
application they use needs a static printer name to print
to.

One other option is can the term serv client have his own
printer folder? If so, I can make the application grab
the default printer (which would be only their local
printer).

thanks for any help. Assume my Term Serv knowledge is
minimal in your reply (which isn't far from the truth! :)

Howard, can you e-mail me directly? I've been working on
a small batch script that might be able to accomplish this
task for you. If it works, I'll post it to the forums
here.

This is really no big deal. I'm doing this for multiple
printer types at numerous sites. As long as the Term
Server has the correct printer driver, the clients printer
will redirect & print at their location. What I do is
once I know what printer is involved, I go to the
appropriate website and download & install that printer to
my Term Server machine to LPT1. Once I've installed it, I
just delete it & the next time the client logs on, all is
fine. However, before they log back on after you do this,
have them open their "My Documents" folder and delete a
file called "default.rdp". It might be hidden, but if you
tell the folder options to allow seeing all files, you'll
see it.

Thanks for the info. I don't think this will help because
the application they use must have a static printer name.
This will still give me the name of the printer, pluss a
dynamic session number from ts.

I recently wrote a script loosely based on the one that
Claudio wrote a little while ago. I haven't had a chance
to test it out, so if you are interested, I can either
send it to you directly or I can post it here...
