You can contact Microsoft for the hot fix. Simply call them and tell them
your computer is experiencing the problem described in Knowledge Base
article [insert number for your problem here] and you need the hotfix. They
will not ask you any questions such as the brand of the machine. They will
send you an email with a download link and a password to open the
password-protected zipped file.

The entire process takes maybe 10-15 minutes and is extremely easy.
