Temporary Internet Files

I am using a system with OS as WINDOWS XP with hard disk capacity of 40 GB.

At one instance, the OS showed low virtual memory. when checking into hard
disk space i got surprised that my C: drive along is showing 80.5 GB storage
and free space is just 783 MB.

I checked every subfolders in C: drive and found in
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings folder has 73.5 GB
data but showing no files. (Explorer settings shows all hidden files).
I also scanned my computer with escan which has all updates upto today's
date and no virus found.

Can any one help me how to rectify this problem ?

Hello Mahendra,

Virtual memory has little to do with the free space that you have on your hard disk. The windows
notification was just telling you that the system is low on virtual memory (which can be defined as
a dedicated space on your hard disk which is used in conjunction with RAM) and was increasing it. To
get more information about virtual memory in Windows XP, please view the following article:

Virtual Memory in Windows XP
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm

I also do not understand how you can see the total capacity of drive C: as 80.5 GB when you just
have a 40 GB hard disk.

How large is the IconCache.db for the Administrator?

You will have other IconCache.db files each User Profile.

Hope this helps.

Dear Mr. Anando
Noted your comments. After sending the comments to you I run scandisk all
lost chains are removed and againg that particular folder is showing 73.5 GB
space occupied. My computer has 4 partitions (C-9.3 GB, D-11.1 GB E-8.36 GB
and F-8.37GB and i just have OS alone in C: drive.

Now the system is running too slow. Recently, i am getting warning from XP
as USB Port Not Recognized though i am using it for scanning and scanner is
also working perfectly.

In olden days, these error can be rectified by running Norton Disk Doctor.
But I don't know whether the equivalent tool is available for windows XP ?

can u please find me a tool like NDD to solve this problem in windows XP ?

Dear Mr. Gerry Cornell
thanks for immediate response.

My system has :
Iconcache in "Administrator" as 581 KB
Iconcache in "Guest" as 3,149 KB

Message "USB Device Not Recognized " often coming from system tray.

I hope it is time to format C : and install XP freshly.

Kindly give your suggestions.

After you have run chkdsk do the following.

To investigate how you are using hard disk space you need to make sure that
you can see all files. Go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View,
Advanced Settings and verify that the box before "Show hidden files and
folders" is checked and "Hide protected operating system files " is
unchecked. You may need to scroll down to see the second item. You should
also make certain that the box before "Hide extensions for known file types"
is not checked. Next in Windows Explorer make sure View, Details is selected
and then select View, Choose Details and check before Name, Type, Total
Size, and Free Space.

Then enter Windows Explorer and Search My Computer for "pagefile.sys"
without the quotes.Select All files and folders and make sure before
starting
the Search you have checked the first three options under "More Advanced
Options.

In what partition is pagefile.sys.

Forget about formatting or reinstalling Windows XP for now.

Dear Mr. Gerry Cornell,

I followed all those instruction which you had given below.

Search results for pagefile.sys is as follows :
pagefile.sys C:\ 196,608 KB 1/20/2006
pagefile.sys D:\ 389,832 KB 1/10/2006

Dear Mr. Gerry Cornell,

Once again i referred the below link, and run chkdsk with /r option and able
to control the nonlinked data and invalid files. After running chkdsk with /r
option the Temporary Internet Files folder is showing its proper size and the
calculated data space and free space is tallying with the hard disk space
(i.e. c:)

thanks for your useful tips. Bye !

I am getting still the warnings from status bar that "USB Port Not
Recognized". But my scanner is initializing properly and working weel. Also
when i am working in Photoshop low virtual memory warning is coming. In
Photoshop I had set the scratch disk as Fisrt D: (3.83 GB free) Second E:
(1.98 GB free), Third F: 1.15 GB (free). My nature of working file will be
less than 100 MB approx.

How to adjust low virtual memory and avoid the warning "USB Port Not
Recognized" ?
Now I had 2.27 GB free space in C: drive.

The date for pagefile.sys on your D partition looks wrong. It should be the
date and time of the last boot. If it does say 1/10/2006 there is nothing
to do for the moment except to advise what you find.

How much free disk space is there in each partition? In Windows Explorer
right click on each partition letter and select properties to get this
information. Please post the details here.

How much RAM memory do you have?

It is likely that an allocation of 12% has been made to System Restore on
your C partition which is over generous. I would reduce it to 700 mb. Right
click your My Computer icon on the Desktop and select System Restore.
Place the cursor on your C drive select Settings and drag the slider to the
left until it reads 700 mb and exit. When you get to the Settings screen
click on Apply and OK and exit.

Do you have System Restore set to monitor all partitions as it should only
be monitoring your C partition i.e. the partition where the Windows
operating system is located. Right click on the My Computer icon on your
Desktop and select Properties and System Restore. For each of the other
partitions ( other than C ) click on the partition and then Settings and
drag the slider as far as you can to the left , click on Turn Off System
Restore on this Drive and then OK. Repeat the process for each partition.

The default allocation for the Recycle Bin is 10 % of drive. On your drive
5% should be sufficient. In Windows Explorer place the cursor on your
Recycle Bin, right click and select Properties, Global and move the slider
from 10% to 5%.

In Internet Explorer select Tools, Internet Options, Advanced and check
box before "Empty Temporary Internet, Files folder when browser is closed".

Hi,

The files may be corrupted and invisible. I recommend you using
powerful data recovery tools to try brign them back. Among them I can
pose out Active@ undelete. This tool literally saved me before few
times and helped in a simmialr situation. I'm pretty sure you will also
find it useful. It's restore methods are really mighty.
