telnet not echoing

I am trying to telnet into my smtp server from my W2K Professional machine
and it doesn't echo my keystrokes when typing - such as HELO.

On my XP machine it does.

Is there something on the 2000 machine that I need to do to get it to echo?

What are you using for a telnet client?

I recommend the freeware client "PuTTY" which is easily configured for
echo/non-echo among many other things.
