Telling IE6 how to deal with streamed mp3 files (.m3u?)

I used to be able to use IE to listen to streamed MP3 files on sites
running Andromeda, which can stream unmodified MP3s. The author of
Andromeda suggested telling my player to play .m3u files. That didn't work.

I can play mp3 files streamed from Andromeda-enabled sites in both
Mozilla and Opera. Mozilla uses QuickTime, Opera uses RealPlayer.

So it seems to be browser-specific: how do I tell IE what to do with
streamed MP3s (m3u playlists)?

I have found a solution (more or less by accident): I opened up the
QuickTime entry in Control Panel (Win2000 SP4), de-assigned QuickTime to
MP3 and streamed MP3, then reassigned both to QuickTime. Now both IE6
and Mozilla play the MP3 file properly. In Opera 7.x I found a listing
of file types and edited the one for streamed MP3 and told Opera to stop
using RealPlayer and use the QuickTime plug-in instead. Now all three
browsers (IE, Mozill and Opera) all play the streamed MP3 files fine,
using the QuickTime plug-in.
