TCPSVCS.EXE hogging resources

T

Terry

I am running WinXP, home ed. Recently tcpsvcs.exe
starting using 97-99% CPU resources, and I cannot get
online. There is nothing wrong with the DSL modem,
nothing wrong with the router, and the PC can ping other
PCs on the home network, as well as ping the router and
DSL. What's going on??? THanks for your help.

Unless you have gone out of your way to install additional networking
components (Simple TCP/IP Services is the name of the component in
question), you likely have a virus. Many viruses use program names that
look official, similar, or even identical to the names of legitimate Windows
components.

A quick web search found at least one that uses this executable name. Your
best bet is going to be to either update your antivirus definitions and scan
your machine again, or to get an antivirus program if you don't already have
one. There are many free and commercial antivirus programs you can choose
from.
