TCP/IP won't renew

Hi
I am using a laptop with a built in WiFi card (not a centreno chip) I have
struggeld to get it to work on my setup and finally had some success. Then I
rebooted.
Now the WiFi signel is very good but I cannot get onto the web, the setup is
working well for other machines (including Wifi).

Looking at the connection properties I have found the TCP/IP is 0.0.0.0. and
the repair fails at IP renewal. I have looked at the Microsoft site and run
ipconfig in dos mode. The IP is being released successfully but fails to
renew. The message is " Unable to contact your DHCP server".
Can anyone give me any advice?
BTW is there a XPpro version of the old Winipcfg command?
Thanks
Nick

Somehow the TCP/IP has now got a value (169.254.63.62) but I still can't
access the internet. Repairing the connection still fails.

I forgot to say that I have tried to use netsh, without success.

Try to stop and then restart the radio on the wireless NIC. Then go into the
NIC status - usually right click on network NIC icon in the notification
area of the taskbar and clicking on Status (Windows XP). Then select the
Support tab - this will tell you if you get valid IP from your DHCP router.
You can then select details and this gives more info. This is similar to the
WINIPCFG.

The fact that you get a strange IP address is (0.0.0.0) is because the
router has not assigned it an IP yet (normally because you cannot connect to
it). When it gets a strange IP address, Windows assumes the DHCP router has
timed out and supplies one for you. Do you use MAC filtering ? If so, then
this causes the problem if you have not added the MAC address (Ethernet
address) of your new wireless NIC into the router.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the swift response.
I have tried your suggestion but no joy. Initially the TCP/Ip is 0.0.0.0 but
the ICfirewall enabled itself.
When I switch ICF off the TCP/IP changes to 169.254.63.62 but I still cant
access the web or repair the IP.
Incidently, I don't seem to get a default gateway or DNS/WNS server either.

Your 169.x.x.x address is a standard address the you get from XP when you
can not talk to the DHCP server. If you have a hard connect on you laptop
use it and see if you get an IP address from your router. Then make sure
that your wireless setting on both the router/access point and the laptop
are configured the same. Ensure that your encryption settings match also.

Good Luck,

I've spent a few hours trying to rationalise the problem, so here's the
lowdown.

My network runs from a router and has three wired machines, all work
properly. I have two identical WiFi access points which both support
machines without problems (apart from having to re-enter WEP values
occasionaly).

The current problem is with a 'new' laptop which has a built in 1/2 pcmci
WiFi card and runs XPpro. After much work I have it working on a wired
connection without any problem at all. Many attempts to get the WiFi to get
a signal failed until I upgraded the drivers. These proved to be unstable
and I reverted to original drivers. Now I get good radio connectivity to the
AP. The TCP/IP is still a problem. I have tried to specify a fixed address
of 192.168.8.88 and changed my router settings to reserve this for the
laptops WiFi MAC number but I still get no network or internet access.

What I don't know is, does the Netgear access point acts as a hub or a
router since this would impact the MAC address going back to the wired
router.

Thanks for the help,
Nick
