Taskbar size changes...

Hello all,

I've recently installed WinXP Pro on my work-machine. It's been a
clean install on a formatted partition, though other partitions on the
machine remained unchanged. The machine was happily running W2k Pro
SP4 before this.
With WinXP, a very annoying behaviour of the taskbar came up and it's
very confusing.
On W2k, I've always had a double size (that is 2 lines) taskbar at the
bottom of the main screen. Yes, I currently have 2 monitors.
I've tried to configure WXP the same way and found, that upon logon,
the taskbar shrinks back to single size (1 line). Next I've tried to
make the taskbar 3 lines and found that the taskbar shrinks by 1 line
on each logon. Then I've tried to place the taskbar at different
locations other than the bottom of the main screen. I found out that
the taskbar stays the same size if it's at the left or right and
accepted this as a contemporary solution. However it's a bit different
from what I had before and I'm not yet sure I want to keep it this
way.
I've also tried to fix the taskbar position via context-menu or even
the kelly-tools that are often suggested in this forum. Neither
attempt changes the effect described above.

There is a similar unsolved problem by shugy to be found here:
http://groups.google.de/group/micro...cd45?lnk=gst&q=&rnum=2&hl=de#2e2f04581c2ecd45

Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Pelle

Hello again,

I have additional information that I forgot to mention in my previous
post:
I have tried all of the above with an integrated ("docked") quick-
launch bar and a floating quick-launch bar. Neither setting changes
the behaviour.

Regards,
Pelle.

Pelle,

Right-click the task bar, uncheck (or get rid of the check beside)
"Lock the taskbar." Configure the task bar size according to
preference, and then right-click the taskbar, check (or put a check
beside) "Lock the taskbar."

Hello fly,

that's exactly what I was referring to in my first post. I have
already tried to fix the taskbar location with several means,
including the "fix taskbar" option of the context-menu. (see below!!!)

Thanks anyway!
Regards,
Pelle

Hello again,

I was hoping somebody has a better solution for this problem. I've
scanned a bit in several forums and found that this problem is not
unique. However, nowhere's a solution (except to reinstall and hope
for the best).

I'm looking forward to your answers!
Thanks,
Pelle

Hi Pelle,

I had the same problem and came across your post while searching for a
solution; I manage to get it fixed so hopefully it will work for you.
Go to
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...-us-ms-winxp&lang=en&cr=US&sloc=en-us&m=1&p=1
and follow the advice there to save settings on exit and before rebooting
right click on desktop and uncheck auto arrange icons and align to grid then
setup your taskbar the way you want and reboot, after if it works you can
turn back on align to grid and auto arrange icons. Hope this works for you.
