Taskbar/quick launch moving

My taskbar and quick launch have moved from the bottom to the side of the
screen.
I want them back to the bottom of the screen.
I know that you have to left click and hold and then drag to new
position, but after attempting for half an hour without success I am
desperate for help.
What am I doing wrong? Is there also a keyboard action?

This must be one of the most asked questions!!

Two things that must be done to move it moving.

First, the taskbar must be UNLOCKED - right click on a vacant area of
it and look for "Lock the Taskbar" in the menu that appears. If this
is ticked then it cannot be moved. If so, select it to untick it.

Secondly, the LEFT (not right) mouse button must be held down in a
VACANT area of the task bar but NOT in the quick launch bar!! The area
beneath the start button (or if it is on the side in your case, to the
right side of the start button), is a good spot. Hold down the left
key and drag it back to the bottom.

Finally relock it.

Thanks Stubbo, it worked(of course) .I wasn't selecting the area around the
Start button.
It's now at the bottom with small icons, as selected, but the taskbar blue
band is twice as deep as before,I've tried dragging it down to minimise the
depth,but no luck.
Any further help appreciated.
Oh! and greetings from a sunny morning in Sidmouth Devon (County) England.

While unlocked, point at the top of the bar and the pointer changes to
the vertical resize pointer. Drag downward to the preferred size.

"I tried that and it didn't work!!!"

OK, then you have the quicklaunch, or another toolbar shown on the
taskbar. On the left, just right of the Start button, there are two
vertical lines. Click the second one, and drag right and upward till
you have two tall areas, one left and one right. Now you can resize the
toolbar. Lock it again so it won't move around on you..
